Would you agree 10-15 years ago business’s had a website to legitimize themselves and because it was the “cool” thing to do? In today’s competitive climate shouldn’t your business be online and ranking for the key terms people are searching for and finding your competitors? If you work with a reputable company with a strong concentration in Search Engine Optimization your business can start being found by the customers looking for you and bring more business in your front door. People are looking for you online, no matter the type of business you have. Occasionally, owners have the misconception you should only have a website if you have goods to sell online or only market your business to Main Street but this idea has proven to be false.
Think about how you yourself search for information. Most people have ditched the phonebooks of yesterday and started with a simple search online to find the number they are looking for to a local restaurant or store. A poll taken by PollDaddy shows that 20% of people rarely use the phonebook, 76% never use the phone book and 4% definitely using the phonebook. Also, studies have shown that people thinking about making a purchase on the web 52 times a year, while .2% think about making a purchase using the phonebook. Many times they are looking for basic information such as hours or services or menus offered. If you have a website to answer some of these basic questions, the need for people to call is minimized and thusly letting you take care of customers walking in the door or providing services. Are you starting to see the ways marketing has shifted in the last 5 years? If you have not shifted the way you have always done your marketing, you are risking not being around the next 5 years.

Staying competitive on the internet can be a fairly difficult endeavor. There is a lot of forces at work all vying for the same pairs of eyes. It might seem logical to think that leaving the information available will be enough. If you want those local sales conversions, its time to take a good look at the Research Online Purchase Offline demographic. A recent study has shown that close to 80% of people buy their product offline after doing online research. Obviously, that is just one study. If we expand the scope and look at more; you can find statements of anywhere from 50-90% of customers are doing the same depending on what study you look at. The point is, no matter what study you look at; that is a lot of people.
Simply put, you want your products and business found when consumers are doing their research. Local online marketing specifically caters to the locale around you. That way, the person a half mile away searching for a product finds yours before a nationwide outlet. Local SEO is a very important niche when one considers the primary goal of search engines. They want to provide the most relevant information to their browsers. What is more relevant than a business that has the product they are seeking only a half mile away? Seems more relevant than a business with the product three states over.
That puts local business owners in a great position. If your local SEO strategy puts you at the forefront of search results on your product for your area; how many of those researchers are you going to be able to convert?
If you are using an online marketing strategy, is it appropriate for local online marketing? National exposure is all well and good. What good is it if the people finding your product live across the country? With as many people that Research Online Purchase Offline, it’s a fairly safe bet they are not going to buy from your business. They are going to go to their own local business and buy what they were researching. The way to remedy that is to increase exposure to local searchers.
Many of the ideas and thoughts presented here can seem intangible. It may seem hard to think that there is so many people simply doing their research and looking elsewhere. If you want a concrete way to consider the ramifications; think of the last month. How many times did you look up information for something online and then bought it elsewhere or offline? At least once, right? Probably several more times than that.
Local online marketing and local SEO strategies are the key to turning those browsers into buyers. If consumers doing research are finding your website and your information, it is a lot more likely they are going to come to your store to make that purchase. The best way to make that happen is to make your information friendly with the search engines. Your consumers are educated when they come in the door. Whose door do you want them entering to make that purchase?

Location-based services such as those from Foursquare, Facebook and Gowalla allow users to share details of their physical location at any given time, with others on the same network. The services are designed to let members use their smartphones and other mobile devices to communicate information about a new restaurant they like, or about a store that might be offering deep discounts or about a great theater show that they might be watching.
Location-based services typically allow users to ‘check-in’ at a participating location, tag friends that might be accompanying them and to let others know where to find them. Many services let users quickly find out if any of their friends are at nearby locations and to learn about discounts and promotions that participating business in the area might be offering.
For small businesses, such services offer a great local online marketing and communication channel. Location-based services allow a local business to broadcast its presence more widely, put itself in front of new customers and communicate better with existing ones. Most such services allow a small business to carry out local online marketing campaigns, announce promotional offers and communicate details of new products and services. Importantly, location-based services allow users to submit reviews and opinions of the businesses they frequent. As a result, these services have become a very important channel for word-of-mouth promotion for local businesses.
Foursquare was one of the first to launch location-based services. Individuals can use the service to check-in at participating locations, submit reviews and recommend businesses to their friends. Foursquare uses a system of ‘points’ and ‘badges’ to reward users who frequently patronize participating businesses. Local merchants can use the service to offer special discounts and promotions to new customers who check-in at their locations, or they can use it to reward existing and loyal customers with special offers and freebies.
Facebook Places is a relatively more recent, but rapidly growing location-based service. Facebook Places borrows many of the same concepts that Foursquare pioneered with its service. However, what makes it very different is the sheer size of Facebook’s member base. Just like Foursquare, Facebook Places too supports a feature called Facebook Deals that allow businesses to offer incentives to attract and retain customers. For example with Facebook Deals, a local merchant can offer special discounts to new customers and reward frequent customers with special offers when they do Facebook check-ins at their business.
Importantly, Facebook check-ins result in the name of the business and its location being automatically broadcast to all of the user’s friends. A business can get more local exposure by buying and placing pay-per-click advertisements that are automatically served up on a Facebook user’s mobile phone when they are in the vicinity of the business.
